Walking Into Homelessness – Where you gonna sleep?

MEET YOUR CITY ... ... Starting at on the riverbank just below the farmer’s market, this walk will highlight the fact that some people in Saskatoon have nowhere to sleep at night.  Walking through the park, under bridges past empty doorways and ATM vestibules, through back alleys, across to a local overnight shelter the walk will share facts and ideas about being homeless in Saskatoon.  Where do you find a safe place to sleep when the alternatives are slim?  What leads people to become homeless and live on the streets seeking shelter wherever they can find? In September 2012 there were over 300 people in our city who had no permanent place to live – a number of those people had been homeless for a long time. This Jane's walk will highlight the "walk into homelessness" and help participants come to understand how some people in Saskatoon can find themselves without shelter.

So you want to join us...

Tips for Participants

  • Plan your Jane’s Walk itinerary ahead of time. Confirm the date and time your tour is offered and the starting place on the website program. If you're doing more than one walk, make sure to leave enough time to get to the next starting place. Print out the timeline reminder schedule or download the file to your smartphone.
  • You'll be walking some distance, and the ground may not always be paved.  Wear sensible shoes – something cushy and supportive. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fashion. After all, Nancy Sinatra recommends boots made for walking.
  • The walks will go rain or shine.  Check the weather report, and dress accordingly.  If it looks like rain, you'll be more likely to stay warm and dry if you layer up and bring an umbrella.
  • Ask questions – offer insights. Jane’s Walk works best when the tour has a friendly, conversational feel. Introduce yourself to fellow walkers, volunteers and guides.
  • Be curious.  Consider attending walks in neighbourhoods you already know and even live or work in, to deepen your appreciation and network in the area.
  • Cultivate your curiosity – venture farther afield and find out what is wonderful about neighbourhoods you’ve only heard about in the media or didn’t even know existed. Be adventurous.  Take lots of pictures, savour the sites and sounds. Stop in at a café, pub or restaurant and linger. Develop your own impression of an area and share it with others.
  • Get in close in order to hear the tour guides.  Stand close to the speakers.  Remember to leave enough room on the sidewalk for people to pass by.
  • Pay attention when crossing the street (cross at signals or crosswalks), and watch for guidance from the marshals (those people with the flags).
  • Thank the leader and volunteers for giving their time to this thrilling insider’s guide to local communities.
  • Send us your feedback, thoughts, and ideas on the walks and other events you attended.   Fill our the participant survey.

Small town oasis in an industrial desert- and the biggest garage sale in the city! (BICYLE TOUR)

MEET YOUR CITY ....... Montgomery Place is one of the last intact VLA (Veterans Land Allotment) neighbourhoods in Canada. People are drawn to the ½ acre lots and the small town atmosphere. Come check out the bargains at the giant annual garage sale the first week-end of May! The community is surrounded by industry- the landfill; a major inland grain elevator; a major gas compression station (which house a couple innovative energy sustainability projects); the confluence of both the CP and CN railway tracks; and the future new home for the City Yards where all the graders, snow ploughs, etc. will be stored and dispatched. Not to mention the Bus Barns which are moving from Caswell to south of Montgomery. Come along on a bike ride and see where your electricity comes from, your garbage goes, and how the goods and services you rely on are moved in and around the city whilst the residents of the community still manage to honour and commemorate our war veterans.

Your Leader:
Pat Lorje, will take you on a bicycle tour of the neighbourhood on the day of Saskatoon's biggest garage sale.

Meet Your City...Saskatoon City Council enthusiastically endorsed the City Centre Plan in 2013. Plans are underway now to implement many new and exciting changes for the Downtown. This tour will look at some of the key strategies to take Saskatoon’s downtown to the next level. Already popular, the Downtown can attract more people to live and shop as well as more companies to establish a presence in the downtown. But it will take carefully planned improvements to help achieve a population of 15,000 in the Downtown. The City Centre Plan is a big city plan and we will highlight the most important.

What good is the word eARTh with out the word Art , eh?

Meet Your City....Join us for as we discover the conceptualization and story behind our city’s landmark art.

Walk Leader: Laura Hosaluk’s creative practice – spanning painting, found objects, furniture and sculpture – was formed during her childhood in the rich creative community that gathered around her father – the wood artist Michael Hosaluk. Her versatility to move between mediums enables her to express herself in a variety of ways.

Hosaluk had the opportunity to absorb how to be an artist – not only from her father, but also the many students and colleagues who worked beside him in his workshop, many of whom became her mentors and friends. The foundation of her education began in 1994 when she attended her first International Woodturning Conference in Saskatoon, SK.  In 1996 Hosaluk began attending the Emma Lake International Collaboration, an innovative workshop model for un-structured creative collaboration between artists working in traditional craft and those engaged in contemporary method.

The Collisions That Create Our Community

Meet Your City..By plodding through the streets and trails of one of our historic neighbourhoods we will explore how collisions of forces and ideas of various forms have formed and are forming our City.  As a Councillor I have come to increasingly believe that what we see in a City around us is so often the result of collisions of ideas and forces – and want to go on a walk through the community to explore this idea in our everyday reality with people to see if this perspective holds water.

Thinking about Leading a Tour???

JANE’S WALK LEADERSHIP
SASKATOON
Helping others to “Meet Your City”

Jane’s Walk is a series of free neighbourhood walking tours that helps put people in touch with their environment and with each other, by bridging social and geographic gaps and creating a space for cities to discover themselves.  Since its inception in 2007, Jane’s Walk has happened in cities across North America, and is growing internationally.
Jane’s Walk honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning. Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into a strong and resourceful community, instilling belonging and encouraging civic involvement. All Jane’s Walk tours are given and taken for free.
Leading a Jane’s Walk is easy and fun!  There are very few qualifications to take it on, other than a willing energy and knowledge or curiosity about your city/neighbourhood/community.  You don’t need to be an expert!
Ask yourself a few questions

Is there something about my community that I already have a keen interest in, or want to know more about?

Am I willing to organize an hour-long walk accompanied by others who have a genuine curiosity about things that go on around them?

Am I passionate about anything in my community? For example, have I observed health or social issues, architectural concepts, art, history and heritage, walkability or activity, transportation, cycling, environment or culture in my neighbourhood?

Am I OK with chatting in a friendly fashion with a group of 10 – 15 strangers who are keen to hear what I think and know?  Am I interested in their ideas?

If you answered yes to anything above, you’ll make a great walk leader!  Over the next weeks:

·         Do a bit of research on the neighbourhood or concept that grabs you.  Keep a few notes to inform (as well as learn from) others.
Think about concrete examples in an area of the city that will help visualize the idea you want to showcase.
Prepare some ideas about the narration you’ll give as you direct people through that area, highlighting various aspects of your topic.
Map out your route, and rehearse a little to make sure you can finish close to where you started within about 1-1.25 hours, leaving plenty of time for questions and discussion as you go.
Think about a time slot on Saturday or Sunday May 2nd or 3rd. (For example, a high-traffic area might be better at a quieter time of day.)

How could it be any easier?  We’ll help you every step of the way:

Your walk will be publicized on our website, posters, Facebook and Twitter.
You can attend a friendly “getting started” coffee time at Amigos Cantina on 10th Street, on Sunday April 13th at 2 pm.

·         We’ll provide you with volunteers to assist you as you walk, making sure the stragglers are safe and you have the material you need.
·         If you’d like, we’ll arrange someone to snap some photos as you walk.
·         We’ll highlight a few of the walks on Thursday May 1 at 7 pm in the downtown library. We’re showing a film and talking about a few of Jane Jacobs’ ideas. (You can also stay afterwards, and enjoy a coffee and cookie with other Jane Jacobs’ fans, volunteers and walk leaders.)
·         We’ll give you a tee shirt to wear as a walk leader, and to take home as a souvenir.
·         We’ll treat leaders and volunteers to a BBQ thank-you!

In past years, Jane’s Walk has seen leaders walk about their neighbourhoods, sharing stories about who lived in particular homes or when the first houses were built.  We’ve had people tell us about public art.  We’ve had city planners tell us about their vision of the future, and we’ve had a health walk about various community organizations located in a neighbourhood.  Whatever your interest, a walk can be done!  Jane’s Walk is a great way to spend a weekend walking, talking, learning and sharing ideas about living together in our great communities.

We hope you’ll become a walk leader and share your story.

Jane Jacobs would be so pleased!

Jane's Walk Information Session
Jack Sures: A Sensual Touch a film by Linda Corbett
Canadian film
[S.l.] : Eyeris Inc., 2011.
This film is approx. 26 minutes long
synopsis
Sensual, seductive, juicy, voluptuous, magic. These are some of the words people use to describe Jack Sures’ work in clay. It’s an intimate relationship that has lasted over five decades.
In JACK SURES_a sensual touch, filmmaker Linda Corbettpresents the magnificent public mural work of this internationally renowned Canadian artist. Born in the small prairie town of Melita, Manitoba, by the 1960’s Jack had studied in the U.S.A., travelled in Europe and worked at Chelsea Pottery in London, England and on the Tel Katzir Kibbutz in Israel.
“The first time I touched clay you could feel this organic, living mass ready to grow into something.” - Jack Sures
The deepest influences on his work have been Japanese aesthetics, Surrealism and the work of Hieronymus Bosch, but as part of the Regina Clay Movement, his early art flirted with California Funk imagery. As the film examines his murals for the Sturdy-Stone Centre, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Mino ‘89 / International Ceramics Competition and other locations we grow to appreciate how Jack Sures’ art engages us outside the gallery in an art experience that celebrates the tactile connections to nature in our everyday lives.
“He is as plastic as the material he is using.” - Timothy Long

On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes by Alexandra Horowitz

Jane's Walk Friends, you might enjoy this book.........

From the author of the giant #1 New York Times bestseller Inside of a Dog comes an equally smart, delightful, and startling exploration of how we perceive and discover our world.

Alexandra Horowitz’s brilliant On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes shows us how to see the spectacle of the ordinary—to practice, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put it, “the observation of trifles.” On Looking is structured around a series of eleven walks the author takes, mostly in her Manhattan neighborhood, with experts on a diverse range of subjects, including an urban sociologist, the well-known artist Maira Kalman, a geologist, a physician, and a sound designer. She also walks with a child and a dog to see the world as they perceive it. What they see, how they see it, and why most of us do not see the same things reveal the startling power of human attention and the cognitive aspects of what it means to be an expert observer.

As the million-plus readers of Inside of a Dog have discovered, Alexandra Horowitz is charmingly adept at explaining the mysteries of human perception. Trained as a cognitive scientist, she discovers a feast of fascinating detail, all explained with her generous humor and self-deprecating tone. On Looking presents the same engaging combination, this time in service to understanding how human beings encounter their daily worlds and each other.

And Remember, you do not have to have expert eyes to lead a Jane's Walk...lets talk
